Retreating in Costa Rica
When the winter months start to feel relentless and thoughts of beaches and warm nights begin to dominate your daydreams, Patricia Pinto and Jacob Kyle host their popular surf and yoga retreat in the paradise of Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, March 18th - 25th, 2017.
Now in it's fourth year, this Costa Rica surf and yoga retreat offers the perfect respite from the draining hustle of late winter.
Patricia Pinto (founder of LoveSurfYoga) offers her delectable combination of cool charm with sweaty, intelligent asana, while Jacob Kyle (founder of Embodied Philosophy) dishes his unique combination of creative sequencing with deep philosophical teachings.
Each day begins with a light breakfast before morning meditation and yoga asana. Depending on the tides, surfing takes place right after (or before) Brunch. Then free time for excursions or massages before Lunch. Then more time to relax by the pool or go on one of Boca Sombrero's featured outings before the second yoga asana class around 4pm. Dinner follows our second yoga class. Living in the open air for a week aligns you with the rise and fall of the sun... early to bed, early to rise never felt so good.
The incomparable Boca Sombrero is a place of pure magic. The retreat center sits right on the waterfront, with private surf breaks and enough wildlife to fill you with wonder.

Testimonials from our die-hard retreaters...
"I was fortunate enough to meet both Jacob and Patricia at around the same time when they were both teaching at the same yoga studio a few years ago. Observing their friendship really solidified the type of yoga retreat experience I yearned to have. My first yoga retreat ever was with them, to Vida Asana in Costa Rica, because their teaching styles compliment each others’ in a way that felt balanced but fun. I felt safe and cared for with them, which was another reason I looked forward to taking the chance of going off to a new land with them. The second time I went to Costa Rica yoga retreat with them, the retreat center, Boca Sombrero, was out much further and required a commuter jet to complete the journey. The area of Osa Peninsula that Boca Sombrero sat upon was even more of a paradise than the previous place, I couldn’t believe it! There were wild Macaw parrots and iguanas and the property was super well maintained amidst the wild beauty of the jungle. I enjoyed meeting each person that arrived and perhaps it was a combination of the sunny weather, the incredible location, and the laid-back retreat vibe, became friends with everybody easily. There were many activities available, including a horse riding exploration through the jungle, repelling down a waterfall, climbing a 800 year old magnificent tree, and my favorite, the river hike. And of course spa services right on the ocean front! Delicious food and high quality yoga as well as surfing all day long if you please really put the entire retreat in a highly memorable place in my life. I’ve made it yearly ritual to go to Costa Rica with them whenever they hold the retreat and have been three years in a row now."

INFORMATION FROM BOCA SOMBRERO
Our spacious beachfront property has been landscaped with care to promote privacy and to welcome wildlife. We have eight thatched-roof tent platforms and three houses, Casa Rio Sombrero, Casa Playa Sombrero and Casa Troya. The houses and tent platforms are just steps away from Playa Sombrero as well as the mouth of Rio Sombrero, an excellent place to take a dip in fresh water.
Casa Playa Sombrero has an open construction style that allows for a steady ocean breeze throughout the living space and provides both ocean and lush mountain views. Upstairs has a large floor plan with a beautiful hardwood floor and a thatched-roof ceiling. This room provides two netted, king-sized beds and a balcony with a spectacular view of the Golfo Dulce. Downstairs has a cozy living space, bathroom and a detached kitchen equipped with professional appliances. Both the living area and kitchen open up to the spacious swimming pool, deck and lounge area. The pool has both deep and shallow areas - perfect for relaxing or swimming.
Casa Rio Sombrero is custom-finished with fine hardwoods, an open floor plan and a beautiful thatched roof. Upstairs the house has two bedrooms containing king-sized, netted beds. Downstairs, there is a central, open kitchen designed for gathering at the bar. It is also equipped with modern appliances. There is a comfortable dining area and an artfully designed bathroom, detached from the main structure for privacy. The bathroom area includes a covered dipping pool - a refreshing escape from the midday sun.
Casa Troya reflects the typical home design of the Osa Peninsula with its half-height walls and natural, local building materials. It has a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom downstairs and a loft partitioned into two bedrooms upstairs. The overall aesthetic of this home evokes a sense of movement as the lines of the structure resemble a wave, ship or an animal, depending on one's perspective. Casa Troya offers a comfortable and inspired place to spend your vacation.
Our eight thatched-roof tent platforms are spread out on the magnificent 20-acre property. They are specially designed for comfort in a tropical climate. The thatched roof will keep you dry and cool, while a transparent material along the roof-line lets in light. The platforms are outfitted with beautiful, screened Moroccan-style tents whose special fabric allows for ventilation and guarantees dulce sueños (sweet dreams). Each bungalow has a cozy porch for relaxing and a private, open-air shower adjacent. Shared bathroom facilities are nearby and conveniently located.
The third house on the property is the Casa Grande, a spacious home where we gather to enjoy meals. Here our professional kitchen crew prepares and serves delicious food in beautiful surroundings. Casa Grande also offers a comfortable and stylish lounge area for just hanging out.
The yoga deck is a 9- by 13-yard hardwood platform built with bamboo and a thatched roof. It sits in front of the beach and comfortably accommodates 30 people. Straps, blocks, and blankets are available. Please ask your clients to bring their own mats. (We have a few in case someone forgets to bring one.)
You will be booking a flight to San Jose and then a domestic flight to the Osa Peninsula. Sansa and Nature Air are the two airlines in Costa Rica with several flights daily to Puerto Jimenez from San Jose. The flight is about 45 minutes and costs approximately $130 each way. You will find links to both airlines in the “Getting There” tab on the Boca Sombrero website.
Please note that Nature Air takes off from Tobias Bolaño Airport in Pavas/San Jose, which is about a 30-minute taxi ride ($25) from the Juan Santamaria International Airport. If you don’t stay overnight in San Jose you might want to fly with Sansa and simply go to the Sansa terminal next door to Juan Santamaria International Airport.
Once in Puerto Jimenez, the taxi ride to Boca Sombrero is about 35 minutes and costs $30. Some taxis can hold up to six people.
